Coronation of Napoleon by Jacques-Louis David
Napoleon threw himself a coronation ceremony at Notre-Dame Cathedral (by my apartment!) and hired Jacques-Louis David to commemorate it  on a canvas measuring over 500 sqaure feet.  The austerity of the painting demonstrated Napoleon’s ability of crafting a public image for political reasons.  Very much a 20th-century understanding for a 19th-century leader.
